It seemed like they'd followed Tobias's clues and solved the mystery of why Avery had been brought there, but a lot of questions still remained. That was when she learned that she'd inherited biliions from a man she'd never even heard of, and was whisked away from her home in Connecticut to live in the mansion of deceased Texas billioinaire Tobias Hawthorne, alongside his disinherited daughters and grandsons. In THE HAWTHORNE LEGACY, it's been just a few weeks since 16-year-old Avery's life changed forever. Only towards the ending, you feel the real suspense and twists. The ending is satisfying, but the beginning is quite slow and uneven. Drugs are found in an adult's room, a drunk old woman causes a scene at an event, and two characters sound rather drunk over a phone call. There are also romantic feelings and attractions, kissing (same & opposite sex) a stripping game (with no nudity described, but a character is about to take of his pants yet another character interjects) and flirting. Strong language includes bitch, slut, a-hole, and damn but one character uses creative words that sound like profanity instead of using real profanity. Also, a character is killed by a bullet (no heavy gore described). Other scares include a bloodstained bedsheet, a character being kidnapped (tied to a chair, and threatened with a gun). Furthermore, a dead snake and a heart with a knife through it are both left as a threat. Characters discover arson, murder, and more. While the book stays tween and teen friendly, there's some potentially upsetting violence. Parents need to know that THE HAWTHORNE LEGACY is the sequel to THE INHERITANCE GAMES by Jennifer Lynn Barnes. Pills, alcohol, and powder are found in a missing adult's room.
Strong language includes "bitch" and "slut." Teens are overheard on the phone sounding drunk after playing a drinking game. Sexy stuff includes some kissing (same-sex and opposite-sex), a stripping game with no body parts described, and lots of romantic tension and dynamics.
Actual violence expereinced in the story include a bomb exploding being shocked with a defibrilator being drugged, tied to a chair, and threatened with a gun online threats and a bloody sheet with an animal heart with a knife through it left as a threat. Characters investigate attempted murder, kidnapping, arson, and mysterious deaths. Reading the books in order is recommended for a better understanding of the characters and the events leading up to this installment. Parents need to know that The Hawthorne Legacy is a mystery adventure that continues the story begun in The Inheritance Games by popular YA author Jennifer Lynn Barnes.
